Arts Col 754 and Theatre 754: Digital and Physical Lighting

Digital + Physical Lighting is an introduction to the basic principles and concepts of lighting as used in theatre and computer graphics and how they relate and differ from each other. Working in collaborative, multidisciplinary teams students will develop digital and physical lighting schemes for objects, interiors and worlds. Topics covered include the historical perspective, terms and concepts, physics of light, lighting style, storytelling with light and professional practice.

Physical Lighting of Objects

Each group is assigned a similar yet unique still life composition, consisting of a range of objects situated on a table. Students demonstrate each of the seven properties of light and one of the lighting approaches used frequently in design practice.

Time of Day and Mood Still Life

This project mirrors the experience students had on Project 1 using physical lighting by applying the fundamental principles and elements of lighting for computer imagery to a simple scene of virtual objects. The focus is on the simulation of time of day and portrayal of mood.

Studying Color, Textures, and Transitions within a Space through Genre

This project considers both objects and environment. A scene is provided that includes a pre-determined space and pre-determined props. All of the geometry is associated with descriptive shaders. Team members design lighting for the space and props based on a contrasting film genre.

Physical Lighting of an Interior/Exterior

This project studies concepts involving lighting style and the progression of light over time in a non-changing physical environment. Design approaches are derived from the application of a selected film style. The approach is applied to lighting a space over the course of one day. The use of sound, music, or MIDI is used as an underscore element and/or special effect.

Lighting a World and Moment

In this project, students create an installation that illustrates the mood, timing, text and situation of a given Haiku. The final project is a synthesis of the aspects of digital and physical lighting, as well as an experimental exploration into new ways in which both physical and digital lighting can be used to imply meaning and form.
