In addition to the courses that will be taught in the EMMA lab this year, EMMA will host a number of research projects and performances in 2007-2008.
The OSUdance Resident and Visiting Artists Performance is moving to EMMA Lab November 14-17. The new venue offers the artists new possibilities of interaction with an array of media artists and unique configurations of the performance space.
Ph.D. student Ashley Thorndike will be developing new work in collaboration with composer Peter Swendsen, a professor at Oberlin College. Exploring themes of "proximity and the physical, temporal, and emotional conceptualizations of closeness and distance", the work will take advantage of the EMMA lab to "exploit the attention to detail that comes about when performers and audience share a space that is, through the use of interactive technologies, unstable." The piece will be performed in late 2008.
Lise Worthen-Chaudhari will be conducting research that investigates possible factors affecting the perception of gravity when viewing imagery generated from motion capture data. Different aspects of the body in motion that become simplified in order to be represented in software will be probed and adjusted to determine which prove most influential.
Norah Zuniga-Shaw's "Living Map" series continues with the Murmur collaborative project, exploring the construction of immersive, interactive sound environments.
We are now entering our third year of initial funding. While the first year's budget established our core performance environment, this past year we've solidified our technical resources, building on prior capabilities and needs. We look forward to exploring the use of newly acquired technologies such as GPS equipment, infrared cameras, and HD video all newly available for student, staff, and faculty research in this upcoming year.
