See What Our Students are Up To....

Several ACCADians interned recently:

Matthew Bain (Design), a third year MFA candidate ventured to Electronic Arts in Los Angeles for a 12 week internship. He worked on a game that was code named "LMNO" and was originally envisioned by Stephen Spielberg. Matt wrote, the experience was great! I was able to work with lots of wonderful, down-to-earth people that had previously been in other industries and companies like ILM. The facilities were incredible and the overall working environment was very positive.

Sucheta Bhatawadekar (Design) a third year MFA candidate completed an internship with PDI/Dreamworks Animation in Redwood City. After the first few weeks of training on Dreamworks' proprietary software, Sucheta had the opportunity to work in the Lighting Department on "Shrek the Halls", a Christmas special which aired last December (ABC). Sucheta worked alongside ACCAD alumni: Min Lee (Lighting) and Michael Collery (Art Ed, 1985), head of Matte Painting. Sucheta returned to ACCAD to complete her degree by Spring 2008. Toward the end of the internship, DreamWorks offered Sucheta a full time position in the Lighting Department which she accepted. Sucheta will join the Lighting staff this summer.

Fran Kalal (Design) a third year MFA candidate returned this quarter after a 6-month internship with Pixar Animation Studios as a Technical Director intern. Fran wrote shaders and painted on "WALL-E" and the short that will precede "WALL-E". Both will premier in June of 2008. Fran was privileged to work with ACCAD alum Kyoung Lee (Art & Tech, 2004) on the short. Fran will return soon to Pixar where she will work under the direction of alumnus Steve May (CSE, 1998) for the movie "Up". She is now finishing her thesis, planning to move to California, and planning her wedding to a fantastic person!

DRUMS DOWNTOWN
Feb/March 2008

Drums Downtown has become a premiere Columbus Arts event. Performances have been held in contemporary center city venues for the past 5 years. This February the OSU School of Music (Percussion), Departments of Dance and ACCAD (Matt Bain) will offer an unusual blend of creative energy to a growing audience.

Matthew Bain (Design), participated in Drums Downtown last year and this year will add new dramatic interactive sights to the sounds of an OSU Percussion ensemble. Matt will introduce a real-time 3D computer animated visualization that responds and reacts to 6 percussionists in a piece entitled "Glades/ Origins" by Henrik Strindberg. This animation will be generated in real-time and respond to the live input from the percussionists. A process blog of the current work is available at: http://accad.osu.edu/~mbain/thesis/drums2.html

Tyler Ayres (Design) is near completion of his animated short entitled "Red and Blue". Tyler wrote, I developed "Red and Blue" during my study at ACCAD. The inspiration for the story came from several places. Most importantly, I have always been a fan of the underdog. I also love the art of animation and particularly short animated stories.
tyler2
Although animation can be challenging and a quite lengthy process, I am pleased with the results. The animation is simple and straight forward with some tongue in cheek humor. The narration supports the visual effects and use of creative sound completes the animation. Red and Blue is also my compliment to ACCAD alumnus, Chris Wedge (Art Education, 1985), and his "Balloon Guy".

THANK YOU

Alumni Gifts

ACCAD thanks Shaun and Alicia Ho for their recent generous donation to ACCAD's research fund. These meaningful contributions from our stellar alumni foster unique research experiences for students who study and work here; research that Professor Charles Csuri envisioned for all of us. Students benefit from these funded opportunities in profound ways. We are deeply grateful to Shaun and his wife for their generosity.

Shaun Ho was an outstanding and pioneering member of CGRG and Cranston / Csuri Productions. He wrote ground breaking algorithms that set early standards for computer graphics. Most importantly, Shaun was an inspiring colleague and quiet leader for those of us lucky enough to have worked with him. In Professor Wayne Carlson's course, "The History of Computer Graphics" one of Shaun's pieces is referenced. The title of the piece is "Vases" (click for quicktime).

Gifts to the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design make a tangible difference in the daily life of our students and our research endeavors. Gifts can be made in one of two ways:

1. Via the University's on-line giving program, you can direct your donation to ACCAD. Specify your donation to ACCAD by entering your gift amount on the top line (first entry field).

MURMUR

The International Computer Music Conference

August 2007
Copenhagen

Professor Marc Ainger (Music), Professor Norah Zuniga-Shaw (Dance) and Dr. Matthew Lewis (ACCAD) were invited to the International Computer Music Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark last August to present their interactive sound-movement work Murmur. Marc and Norah accepted the invitation, bringing along ACCAD graduate student Benjamin Schroeder (CSE) for technical support and Music faculty Ann Stimson for documentation of the event.

As part of the invitation, the group participated in a two week residency at the Akademiet for Utaemmet Kreativitet (the Academy for Untamed Creativity), where they further developed Murmur with some of the most illustrious artists of the current French New Circus scene (including Hyacinthe Reisch, Jerome Thomas and Agnes Bruhn). They also participated in a web radio interview on Danish Radio 2. The final performance occurred to a full house at the PLEX Theater in Copenhagen.

Developed at ACCAD, Murmur is built around an infrared vision system that tracks performers’ location in three-dimensional space. Position, speed, and the amount of performers’ actions control various aspects of the (multi-channel) sound. Sounds and voices recorded from various locations throughout the world are mapped to the performance space. While in Copenhagen, additional local sounds were incorporated.

For more information and movie clips go to: Murmur

The trip to Copenhagen was made possible by funding from ACCAD, Music, The College of the Arts, Dance and the Danish Arts Council. Funding for Murmur includes support from the OSU Arts and Humanities Seed Grant Program.

New Interface Lab at ACCAD

interface The Interface Lab is a new space for research and experimentation with alternative displays and gesture-based interaction systems. Central to the lab is a 10 foot wide by 6 foot high rear projection screen configured for stereoscopic display using 3D glasses. A motion capture system can be used for hand and head tracking, as well as solutions using camera vision for tracking full body movement or interaction on the multi-touch table display that was developed in the lab.
Developed under the direction of Professor Alan Price (ACCAD/Design), the lab includes access to a stereoscopic head-mount display with motion tracking, a data-glove, and a variety of conventional input devices for re-purposing and experimentation. An emphasis is placed on reducing the learning curve of implementing these hardware combinations so that researchers can focus on ideas and creativity.

The Interface Lab facilitates ongoing research in immersive environments and real time animation. It is a resource for exploration and exposure to alternative ways of thinking about display and interaction with computer graphics applications and creative works developed by faculty, staff and students at ACCAD.
