| We chose to base our lighting scheme and 2-minute sequence off of the movie Chicago, which we categorized as a "ganster-musical" because of its story of crime and redemption. We decided that lighting a live body in addition to the provided flat would serve our purpose of showing off the color and movement of the lights. As per the assignment, our scene was composed of three segments --the set up, the bust, and the aftermath. The set up establishes our location in a night club (in this case, a speakeasy) with silhouette lighting, and "flashing" red and blue lights, synced to the music through the use of MIDI. The bust brings in the use of one of our practicals - a cop car beacon - and white flashing lights to indicate gun shots (again achieved with MIDI). We tried to play up the melodrama of the aftermath with a soft look of warm front lights to enhance the second practical source - an incadescent lamp. |

Our silhouette look (minus the body). We decided to use the angled cross lights to simulate a night club / rock concert mood --they conjur a feel of moving lights for me. |
|
Added to our silhouette are side down lights in blue and magenta. These are focused to light both the space outside of the flat (with the help of haze) and half of a person standing in the center of the set up. |
|
In the next two looks, we've added some front light in a less-saturated cyan and a redder magenta to draw out the textures in the brick wall and graffiti. These are used during the dance scene as bump lights along with the down lights seen in the previous image. |

| This is a still from the bust scene. The lights that are up are part of a MIDI controlled sequence that corresponds to gun fire. | ![]() |
This is our visible practical (the beacon used to simulate cop car lights) is behind the flat. The additional warm top light is for the person to return into (and see the destruction). You can also just make out in the haze the light "beam" behind our flat that represents a street lamp outside of the club. It is on the top left to down right diagonal of the flat.
