|tokyo| brings the 2D cinema into the 3D performance space, housing a scene of cinematic three dimensionality.
2D visual art forms have long been sorting out the problem of how to represent depth, from the flattening of traditional Japanese painting to the gadget-based extension of the image in 3D film. Spectators have learned at once to believe everything and trust nothing that they see.
The almost overlapping experiences in film viewing of seeing a 2D image and perceiving a 3D actuality initiate an active participation with the image, a 'translation' between seeing and believing. The process translates a 2D representation into its 3D referent and marks the avenue through which our visual reception becomes a bodily reception. The goal of |tokyo| is to construct this translation process in live performance.
