effects
With Nick Foster !
the assignment was to create a morph similar to the magic potion morph in Shrek 2. Tathagata Ray and I worked together on this assignment.
first tries at the sequence one two three four
initial feedback from Nick Foster: the transition is the key. the light ball is not married to the transition, so it detracts from it. the pixies should happen first, and cause the magic. they should encompass the area where the magic is to happen. it is important to render the effects with a mask so that some of the effects appear to be occluded by the object. otherwise, the effects will look flat. the smoke should result from the pixie dust, follow its trajectory, and then disperse more and fade more at the end. the pixie dust causes energy inside the objects, and the transition happens from there.
after the first review
final feedback from Nick Foster: the pixie dust starting the reaction is good. the dissapating smoke makes a good ending. the instantaneous pop at the end is nice, because it is confined and does not take the viewer away from the transformation. the explosion of light hiding the geometry transition was an effective use of work time. that way the geometry transition that would be covered by layers of effects anyway was not given excess thought and effort that could go to more effective use on the layers.
