1. This is looking east in room VI. What is the
material of the paintings and their frames?
| |
Tim:
Mosaic looks very good, but the interior wall surface should be the
"imitation marble," as Jayni points out and as we can still see in
situ on the south wall of Room VI. I'm not sure I understand the panels
that Jayni describes. What's the evidence for this and for the base
wall color?? |
|
| |
Fikret:
|
|
| |
Jayni:
this
looks great with the mosaic! the painted panels don't have 'frames'
so much as they are in 'raised relief' stucco, refer to those Kenneth
Schaar drawings of the remains and reconstructions of the central
southern wall in VI for that element. As for what's in the panels,
just give them some solid earth tones alternating across the room
(the base wall color should be more 'buff' or beige in color). If
you feel like it and it's not too much trouble, the panels can have
floating small (18 inches or so) female figures like nymphs or victory
personifications, but this is not something we have evidence for.
The statue base at this east end probably had a nude male statue standing
on it, maybe Apollo or Hercules.

2. Looking west in room VI. What else goes
in this room? Any ceiling decoration?
| |
Tim:
There may be disagreement about the sculpture at the end(s) of the
room, but this will have to be solved. Why would the vault be buff
or beige in color, rather than white? Again, should be imagine the
same kind of string decoration we see in Room VI on the vault?? |
|
| |
Fikret: |
|
| |
Jayni:
the statue at this end is a standing Athena.
Otherwise we don't have evidence for further decoration. Keep the
ceiling plain, the same color as the base wall color.

3. Looking north in room VIII.
| |
Tim:
What's the evidence for this ashlar surface? This isn't my idea of
what the wall looked like. Is there any evidence for this? What about
mouldings around the door? I can't tell from the image what these
are meant to look like. |
|
| |
Fikret:
|
|
| |
Jayni:
this is fine, the floor and walls are as they should be (although
it looks like an institution doesn't it?). Maybe (if it's not too
much trouble) give the walls a more pleasant color, a soft yellow
or something "cozier" than this concrete looking gray.

4. Close up of phallus. Is this accurate?
| |
Tim:
Good job on the herms! |
|
| |
Fikret:
|
|
| |
Jayni:
herms in VIII: just fine, unless you can put
them outside, at least as an alternative. Otherwise perfectly accurate
and pretty close to what the faces of the statues look like - good
job! |
