Welcome to our Home page

The purpose of the Senior Theatre Research and Performance focus group of the Association of Theatre in Higher Education is to promote the field of senior theatre, encouraging more seniors to become involved on stage or with the arts.  We sponsor a yearly convention and provide linkages to events happening around the world.

Our annual conference was held in San Antonio, Texas from August 12 to 15, l998.  It was an excellent opportunity to meet other practitioners in senior theatre, discuss new methods, and share ideas.  Several senior theatre sessions were held:

August 13

“Dramatizing Journeys Across the Life Course”

Performance of Attitudes with Wings by Victoria Coffman

Creating Women’s Autobiographical Performances” by Dr. Joy Reilly

“Getting your Play Performed: Marketing the Life Course Play” by Bonnie L. Vorenberg

Later in the day, the Extended Run Players, a senior theatre group from the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio presented You Can Never Have Too Much Sky.  Directed by Sister Germaine Corbin, the script is based on the poetry and prose of the local, renowned author, Sandia Cisneros.

August 14

“New Directions in Senior Theatre” was an open discussion on the future growth of the art form.  The conversation was lead by Bonnie L.Vorenberg and included Arne Lindquist of Senior Theatre USA and Sister Germaine Corbin.

August 15

“Seeing Age: The Changing Image of Older Adults in Theatre” presented by

Anne Davis Basting, the author of the newly released book, The Stages of Age.

“Turning Oral History into Performance” was presented by Steve Pennel of the SPRI Theatre Company and Dr. Joy Reilly of Ohio State University.

The next ATHE convention will be held in August l999.  Please contact ATHE for details.
