Avocado Chair [November 20, 2005]
The Avocado Chair was inspired by a desire to create a chair specifically for the female body. Mimicking the shape of an avocado creates a form that is complimentary to the shape of the hips.
Focusing on the pear-like shape and the delicate texture of the avocado resulted in a form that cradles the body comfortably. The body rests within a fleece covered framework that was model using Maya. The Maya models were then projected on large pieces of wood, traced, and then cut out. The slices were assemble in serial planes. Canvas was dyed to create a textured avocado skin look, and then it was stretched over the wooden framework. Softer fleece material covers the canvas on the inner section. The final chair looks like an avocado that is sliced and half with the pit pulled out. Your seat rests where the avocado pit would be.
