Assignment (1): Analysis of Existing Project
Value: 10 out of 100 course points
Due Date: Week 3, Day 2, beginning of class
Analyze an existing short film (under 3 minutes).
Identify the elements of the piece and analyze how they were developed
Include analysis of story, structure, assests (characters, environments, etc.), and the methods used to create the piece.
The purpose of this assignment is to learn how a piece is made, what it consists of, and how it might have been created.
Assignment (1) Requirements:
- Brief character descriptions
- Setting / environment / prop descriptions
- Brief plot outline - Prepare a brief plot outline of the piece. This outline should include the following:
- A concise description of major plot events, including:
1. Conflict and/or drive motivation (what moves the plot forward)
2. Resolution /conclusion
- Visual Development Page(s): For the purposes of this assignment, compile the visuals to
support your analysis the piece and it's elements.
- Inspirational reference materials
- Conceptual studies of primary characters, settings, and props
Students will prepare a 3 minute presentation of their story analysis and materials.
Visual materials must be formatted for effective display within a screen resolution of
1024X768 and presented in a slideshow formatted. Suggested delivery methods include:
- Adobe Acrobat
- Linked web pages
- Microsoft Powerpoint
- Windows XP slide tool.
Students are responsible for ensuring that presentations function properly by the due date. Any students unfamiliar with the delivery methods outlined above should meet with the instructor by no later than the 3rd week of the quarter.
Grading Criteria for Assignment (1):

Handing in Assignment (1):
Students will place their projects in the course drop box for Assignment (1), located in the Fishbowl at Y:\Courses\2009-2010\AC730_Garrett_Fall_AU09\Assign_1_Drop_Box.
The file must be named using the following convention:
Students first initial-last name_assign1.file extension
For example: Jane Doe would hand in an Adobe Acrobat file as: j-doe_assign1.pdf
Students placing a sequence of files into a folder for use with Windows XP slide tool should name the folder using the convention described above without a file extension.
