McKinley William Thompson, Jr., was born in New York City on November 8, 1922. He grew up helping his father, who was an auto mechanic, repair cars. He showed an interest in drawing at an early age and was always intrigued by futuristic themes. His father recognized his drawing ability and encouraged McKinley to take his talent seriously. His talent for drawing and futuristic interests came together one autumn day in October of 1934. As he walked home from school, McKinley spotted a silver 1934 DeSoto Airflow. It was the first silver car and the first streamlined car he had ever seen. He was awestruck by its unique and striking design. Even the weather conspired in leaving an indelible impression on McKinley. At the very moment McKinley saw the car on that overcast autumn day, the clouds parted and the sunlight lit the car up like neon. Intrigued by this sight, McKinley ran towards the car. At that moment he knew he was running toward his future... to become an automobile designer. |
