Shaders, Textures and Maps:

Surface Properties/Material Attributes

These properties may be distributed throughout surface uniformly, as a uniform pattern, or non-uniformly.

Color

Transparency:

Relief: orange peel vs coin surface

Making Shaders in Maya

Hypershade : Window/Rendering Editors/ Hypershade
Materials: Lambert, Blinn, Phong

Procedural Texture is good for uniform patterns- pattern defined by Maya nodes based on an math algorythm

Image Texture ( Image Map, Bitmap Texture) is good for non-uniform patterns. It is based on a photo or drawing based sample (square image, usually 256x256 or 512x512 pixels)

Color Channels = Red Green Blue (RGB) - used for color, ambient, incandescent, normal maps, specularity
Transparency Channel = Alpha Channel (black and white) - used for transparency, bump, displacement

Texture Projections vs UV layout

NURBS: UV layout cannot be edited
Polygons: custom UV mapping is possible
