Low Poly modeling:

Uses:

-        Games and Virtual Environments (with various LOD –levels of detail)

-        Web 3d content (retailers, web shows, etc)

-        Hi-rez animation as “stand-in” geometry, scene planning, rigging component, such as wrap deformer or a chip set.

-        A stage in modeling a hi-rez model. Low-poly structure allows to determine general proportions of a high-rez object and surface flow in the most efficient way, by using the minimal amount of faces.

Helpful Form Analysis Steps

Every smooth polygon model can be reduced to a simplified low poly structure. One can think of this process as a reverse of Smoothing Operation: a curvature represented by several faces is reduced to flat area represented by one.

Modeling Concepts:

Low poly, primitive-up modeling principle.
Mirroring geometry.

Tools:

Append Polygon
Extrude (this operation can lead to the mistake below, if extrusion is made twice, without offsetting face in the first operation) To remedy: use Mesh/Cleanup/Delete Faces with Zero Geometry Area

Split Polygon
Combine Tools
Merge Vertices
Merge Edges
Snap to Grid
