OPENING DAYS and NIGHTS

The new year, with winter quarter '09 ushered in plentiful headlines for ACCAD. The Columbus Dispatch, Fox TV, WOSU's iMix and others have been digitally promoting new performances and interactive media created by our illustrious students, staff & affiliated faculty......for good reason. Click through the features below to see why ACCAD has recently been in the news.

Empire of Sleep

Alan Price
Professor, ACCAD/Design

Alan Price traveled to Linz, Austria this December to participate in the grand re-opening exhibition at the Ars Electronica Center. His work has been permanently installed in a virtual environment system called "Deep Space", a new addition to the center. The high resolution stereoscopic 3D projection spans a two-story high wall and floor with user interaction through touch screens and motion tracking. Price's most recent work, Empire of Sleep, has been adapted to the display system in collaboration with the Ars Electronica Futurelab team. The public grand re-opening was January 3, 2009.

Alan explains, "Empire of Sleep is an exploration of subconscious externalized through narrative and temporal structure of cinema adapted to the medium of real time graphics and user interaction. Time is emphasized, in which a single moment is in a suspended state, yet you can navigate within the frame on a different scale. The touch screen installation displays interactive stereoscopic 3D renderings of a surreal landscape haunted by a catastrophic event, sculpting a frozen moment of time in an iterating loop, fading away much like images fracture and lose definition as a dream is forgotten. 'The Beach' is the first part of a series."

ACCAD helps celebrate ProMusica's 30th Anniversary

pancakes

Woof, Woof.... is canine for Bravo!! This January, Columbus' ProMusica chamber orchestra celebrated their 30th anniversary on stage. ACCAD was invited to the party. The celebration included three performances with a centerpiece entitled, Thurber Dogs, an orchestral suite inspired by James Thurber's dog cartoons. The suite was previously performed in 1994.

ProMusica reprised the music but this time ACCAD breathed life into Thurber's drawings. Six separately themed, whimsical animations played overhead and in sync with the chamber's performance of Peter Shickele's Thurber Dogs - Suite for Orchestra at the Southern Theater in downtown Columbus.

Initiated by Maria Palazzi, directed by Vita Berezina-Blackburn, the collaboration engaged a multi-talented team of ACCAD students along with faculty advisor, Alan Price and staff member, Tyler Ayres.

Thurber Dogs Performance

The graduate students who deserve enormous credit for their creative work are: Beth Albright, Michele Aubrecht, Joe Bondra, Amber Cecil, Steve Conroy, Jane Drozd, Josh Fry and Iuri Lioi. See the team's Thurber web site for more information on the creative process.

Don't miss this WOSU ArtZine interview about Thurber Dogs, featuring Vita, Tyler, Iuri and Amber.

The Bakery Shop

a collaboration between
ACCAD and WOSU

game board

How well do you know Economics theory? Think you know more than a 2nd grader? Maybe think again. A soon to be released video game hopes to teach second graders about basic economics.

WOSU Public Media staff member, Dr. Marcelita Haskins and Abbejean Kehler, President of The Ohio Council on Economic Education (OCEE) met with Maria Palazzi and then staff member, Brian Windsor to discuss the practicality of creating a video game for this purpose. Eventually, a proposal was submitted to the E|Tech OHIO Multimedia Production PTV. The concept won approval and funding was awarded.

In early 2008, Peter Gerstmann was hired on a part-time basis to lead the project on ACCAD's behalf. This was a natural fit, since Peter teaches a Video Game Design course at ACCAD and is currently developing a new curriculum on the topic.

With the artistic aid of Tyler Ayres and Iuri Lioi (concept development, animation and design), programming help from Warren Francis and Morgan Goose, the game took shape by early spring 2008.

The game has been tested with elementary students at the Mansion Day School, Columbus, OH. See it on-line at: http://www.thebakeryshop.org/

One Flat Thing Reproduced - Performance

Synchronous Objects

a collaboration between
The William Forsythe Co.
ACCAD & OSU Dance
Dance Score - Cue Diagram

In collaboration with world renowned choreographer William Forsythe, ACCAD and the Department of Dance are developing a web project for the choreographic work of Forsythe's, One Flat Thing, reproduced.

Maria Palazzi and Norah Zuniga-Shaw (OSU Dance) have worked closely with Matthew Lewis and eleven graduate students to explore the deep structures of choreographic thinking in order to enrich cross-disciplinary investigation and creativity. This 2 year process integrated the expertise of OSU faculty from Architecture, Statistics, and Geography.

The on-line project will be launched on April 1, 2009.
Here is a not-to-be missed preview.

An exhibition about Synchronous Objects will open in April at the Wexner Center for the Arts and will also feature a special symposium.

Also of note, Professor Zuniga-Shaw received grant funding from the Battelle Endowment for Technology and Human Affairs to write a book about the Synchronous Objects project. Stay tuned for future details.

Necessary Beauty ~ Dance Performance and Technology

Necessary Beauty the Performance
In a promising reprise of their earlier Bessie Award winning collaboration, Landing Place, Vita Berezina-Blackburn of ACCAD and the Bebe Miller Co. mingled their creative energies into a new piece entitled, Necessary Beauty. The dance performance premiered last October 2008.

Vita worked closely with graduate Design students, Iuri Lioi and Stephen Conroy to create the digital imagery. Lane Kuhlman (Design), Ashley Thorndike (Dance) and Amod Damle (Cognitive and Systems Engineering) were also involved at earlier stages of concept development.

In Vita's words, "To simply describe the process of working with Bebe is to compare it to a multimedia jam session that lasts for months and sometimes years. Collaborators, including choreographer, dancers, video artist, writer, dramaturg, musician and myself start by talking about key themes that inspire the piece. In the case of Necessary Beauty it was the concept of dark matter, the idea of its invisible influence and the fleeting clarity of a scientific (or any for that matter) revelation: something that seems clear at one moment can become vague and unconvincing at another point in time. Collaborators develop these themes in their media during months between company residencies and then throw them together to see what shows. The final performance is slowly crafted from patterns that emerge during rehearsals. The logic of this construction is not narrative, but has elements of story that seek to create emotional engagement without representing the literal motives of action.

Conceptually, the visual arc of Necessary Beauty contemplated evolution of art from representational to pastiche to abstract. Trying to blend animation and video we wanted to erase borders between the interior and exterior, landscape and extreme close up thus exploring the notion of fleeting clarity."

STAFF / FACULTY UPDATES

Witnessing History
Aline Davis Travels to the Inaugural

Aline Davis traveled to Washington D.C. to witness in person the inauguration of our 44th President. She arrived early to enjoy some D.C. sights and sounds but also to strategize with friends about where to be on January 20th. Aline was up by 4:00 a.m. Tuesday; dressed in multiple layers; walked 2 miles to the mall; and waited in a security line for 2 hours. It was so cold at one point she could no longer feel her toes. But it's clear there were absolutely no regrets.

Aline's group staked out a place along the Pennsylvania Avenue parade route. Although she didn't take this picture (R), Aline took one like this, proving she was that close to the Obamas. You can read Aline's day-by-day "diary" (for her scrapbook). It is an interesting account of what it was like to be there.

ACCAD Students Collect Festival Awards

Recent Design MFA graduates, Beth Albright and Tyler Ayres have earned numerous festival recognitions for their animated creations. Go to: http://accad.osu.edu/awards.htm for a more complete listing of awards.

goldilocks

The title of Beth's animation is, Goldilocks Redirected. It is a familiar story, but recreated as a puppet show staged in a compressed and non-literal filmspace. Two- and three- dimensional computer animation techniques accumulate as layers of lush texture that construct a balance between graphic simplicity and patterned complexity.

redblue

Tyler's animation, RED & blue is a short film that addresses the social issues of bullying as well as the importance of individuality and self esteem. The film’s story is structured and told as a rhyming discourse. This style of storytelling was used to create the backstory, narration, and compositional timing.
