New Staff

We are pleased to welcome two new staff members to ACCAD.

Glen Shere
comes to us from sunny Sarasota, Florida, where he managed servers for the Ringling School of Art and Design for more than four years. Since April 2002, Glen has been managing the technology operations at ACCAD, leading student employees in upgrading workstations, installing 2.32 terabytes of disk arrays, perfecting vendor negotiation skills, and maintaining close to 24-hour availability on all machines. Glen holds a computer science degree from the University of Northern Iowa, and hopes to pursue graduate studies at OSU.

Brian Windsor arrived from Atlanta, Georgia on February 1st, 2003 to supervise ACCAD's Motion Capture Studio. Brians' wife Shannon and son, Max (2 yrs) will join him soon, once the house sells. Previous to ACCAD, Brian worked for GIANT Studios, as Senior Motion Capture Technical Director. His degree is in Mechanical Engineering from Auburn University in Auburn, AL. Brian also worked for Acclaim Entertainment as Senior Manager of their motion capture studio.

Suba Varadarajan
Many of you may already know, Suba Varadarajan, our previous Motion Capture Supervisor departed ACCAD in October and soon after delivered a healthy baby boy, named Ved. Suba and family are all doing well. Suba plans to continue her PhD studies in Computer and Information Science at OSU and will be doing part of her research in the motion capture studio. Dancing in Motion Capture

We bring to your attention two extraordinary collaborations between ACCAD and the OSU Department of Dance.

The Bebe Miller Dance Company

Last fall, ACCADs Motion Capture Studio was swirling with the presence of dancers and choreographers from the Bebe Miller Dance Co. This tremendously creative troupe pushed and probed the potential of the Vicon System. Our staff discovered that we can effectively capture no more than 5 dancers at one time. To highlight the uniqueness of these dance sessions, OSU Alumni magazine featured a full length article entitled "Bodies in Motion" (must scroll down) in their December 2002 issue. Bebe Miller is currently drafting a Rockefeller MAP grant proposal to secure funding for two more years of experimentation. The goal would be to produce a ground breaking show in New York with streaming, interactive live performances in multiple locations. The productions would include motion capture and virtual technologies.

"When I Am Little Again"

Kareen Balsaam, an MFA candidate in Dance had an early interest in Dance and Technology and was one of the first to experiement with Motion Capture capabilities at ACCAD. As her thesis project took shape, a very personal story unfolded. Through video, still images, dance sequences, motion capture and Kareen's live dance performance, a tribute was made to both her grandfather and the revered Dr. Janusz Korczak who cared for orphans in Poland during World War II. Kareen invited the help of Vita Berezina-Blackburn, an Art and Technology MFA candidate to create virtual environments and characters for the Motion Capture sequences. Blending their talent in Dance, Art and Technology, Kareen and Vita created, "When I Am Little Again". Those who attended the presentation in January, enthusiastically agreed it was an extraordinary piece and one that will remain a truly memorable collaboration between ACCAD, the Department of Dance and Department of Art at OSU.

ACCAD and Theater have produced a play that will incorporate computer images as an integral part of the story. In the next Semaphore, Matt will further explain how this was done.

Grant News ~ Maria Palazzi

Maria would like to report these funding updates:

Battelle Endowment for Technology and Human Affairs Awards $46,242 to ACCAD and the OSU Multicultural Center for a grant proposal entitled, "Adaptive & Multidimensional Contexts: an Exploration of Motion Capture Technology and Native American Dance Documentation."
New Motion Capture technology provides rich possibilities to explore, fully digitally archive and critically examine the relatively undocumented and therefore invisible traditions and adaptations of Native American dance. In response, ACCAD and the Multicultural Center at Ohio State propose to foster a residency think tank experience including dancers, students and audiences to explore and address these issues and produce a best practices model for the use of Motion Capture as an archival and analysis resource for ethnic dance preservation and cultural inquiry.
Potential initial issues for discussion may include but will not be limited to questions such as:
  • How does performing the dances in a lab outside of traditional performance context affect the dancers?
  • What multiple uses are there for using this documentation for teaching within Tribal cultures and outside of these communities?
  • Is the outcome worth the time, energy and expense of utilizing Motion Capture in this regard? Who does this process serve? What works and does not work about it?
  • How can scientists make the technology more useful?
All parties involved will be learning to see Native American culture and technology in new ways.

Ingram-White Castle Foundation awards $20,000 to ACCAD for the summer program, Digital Animation: A Technology Mentoring Program for Young Women. Private donor Mrs. Barbara Fergus donated an additional $15,000 to the program over the next three years. See: www.accad.ohio-state.edu/womenandtech/flash/womenandtech.html

This program will establish a pilot collaboration between The Ohio State University’s Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD) and Columbus Public Schools’ (CPS) Arts and Communications Academies to develop a two-week summer workshop for young women and their teachers in which they will investigate technology through the creative applications of computer-generated animation and web media.

With the collaborative efforts of ACCAD and the CPS academies, young women from some of Columbus’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods will have the opportunity to work with women professionals from OSU who, themselves, are succeeding in dynamic technology-based fields. This program seeks to broaden the range of career options by increasing educational opportunities for young women in our community. This project provides a fostering opportunity for girls to discover technology-related fields that might have otherwise remained unexplored. In addition to developing a learning opportunity for young women, this collaboration is meant to connect educators across the public school and university divide.

ACCAD will continue to seek funding to support this summer experience as an ongoing annual outreach program.

This March I visited San Jose for Game Developers Conference which served not only as my introduction to the game industry, but also a stepping stone towards working in it. On several occassions, upon my request for how I can better myself in preparation for the industry, I was asked to play more games...so, I believe I'm headed in the right direction [:-)]. Also in recent news, I have been asked to speak at Siggraph 2003 as part of a panel on making art utilizing game engines.

Consequently, it looks like I'm going to have to brush up on my public speaking skills, or request that the discussion take place in either the Sims Online or some such MMORPG!"

Carrie Wilson's piece "Anima" was accepted into the SIGGRAPH 2003 Art Gallery. The image is a 16x26" digital composition. Carrie says, "The piece is a combination of many digital self portraits, which I take almost obsessively every few days. I wanted to comment on the grotesque self image people (especially women) are bombarded with constantly by media and advertising. The end result is a reflection on the conflict between how we appear to the world versus how we appear to ourselves." (click image for larger view). Carrie is an MFA candidate in the Design Dept. "Digital Animation and Visualization" program.

I'll be adding digital compositing to that lineup next semester. My classes are stacked so I can still spend some weekends in Columbus. I'm quite impressed by the facilities here and walked into recently updated computer labs with new Macs. The students are mainly commuters but there is some good talent here. After doing the corporate thing I'm glad to be back in academic life. I hadn't realized how much I missed the developing minds and teacher/student interaction. This is a small art faculty and I'm on lots of committees. The town itself isn't much to talk about but is within range of the Cleveland NPR station which plays lots of good jazz music. ~ Marla (e-mail: mayerson@ysu.edu)
