THE RETROSPECTIVE

Autumn returned last year rich with projects, new students and innovative research. By mid-winter '06, our attention was harnessed by the Csuri retrospective which seemed to take on a life of its own. Words like "destiny", "kismet" and "it was meant to be" pervaded. We are still in awe that over 95 original works, plasma screen installations and exhibit catalogues made it to Boston in time. So, this newsletter begins with thoughts and images from Beyond Boundaries.

Timeline

How many of you remember "punch-card" driven animations or early images like those pictured below? Today we marvel at their poignancy; we wonder what it was like to witness early breakthroughs in computer animation, not only at ACCAD, but worldwide.

Tribute and Thanks

We extend profound gratitude to Dr. Janice Glowski whose expertise and professionalism made the debut of Beyond Boundaries exceptional. Jan's curatorial oversight elegantly wove historical significance into inspiring presentation.

ACCAD hired Jan in February 2006 to oversee an aggressive agenda. From day one, Jan's leadership and diligence transformed the proverbial "blank slate" of an idea into a stunning 176 page color catalogue; scanned files became large format prints and interactive digital installations added relevant documentary. We are forever grateful she accepted the challenge.

The Beyond Boundaries catalogue was elevated to extraordinary by the inclusion of a DVD, produced and directed by alumnus and staff member Keith Kelley.

This DVD includes early animations from the late 1960s, recent Generative Movement work, voice-over by Professor Csuri and more. The DVD is compelling, aesthetically beautiful and a smart companion to the catalogue. We owe a debt of gratitude to Keith's dedication. Keith also produced several other DVDs for the Beyond Boundaries plasma screen installations.

Beyond Boundaries is scheduled to show at the Kaohsiung Fine Arts Museum, Taiwan from June - August 2008 and it looks promising that the show will travel to other international venues. This exhibit offers a unique perspective on the emergence of computer animation and profiles an artist beloved by so many of us. It is immensely gratifying to see Professor Csuri honored in this way.

We would like to thank Bonnie Mitchell, Chair of the SIGGRAPH Art Gallery, who originated the "retrospective" idea. Much appreciation also to ACCAD/OSU alumnus, John Finnegan's unwavering support as Chair of SIGGRAPH 2006.

There are many other individuals who cannot adequately be acknowledged here for their contributions. We can only say, "thank you" again for making this happen.

Lastly we would like to name those who financially supported this project: ACM SIGGRAPH, Dr. Gabe and Sandi Campbell, DPI (San Francisco), DreamWorks Animation, SKG, FastFrame (Columbus), Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey Katzenberg, Pixar Animation Studios, Daniel Slane, The Ohio State University: Office of Academic Affairs and Office of the President. We are extremely grateful for their support.

If you would like to purchase the exhibit catalogue, Beyond Boundaries: 1963 to present, please contact the Wexner Center for the Arts bookstore: wexarts.org./bks To learn more about the catalogue, click here.

NEW COURSE ~ Video Game Production

Last spring (2006), Peter Gerstmann, alumnus and part-time lecturer for ACCAD created and taught a new course entitled, Video Game Production. There was plenty of "buzz" on campus about the new course, with a Lantern article and mp4 video interview linked to the on-line Ohio State News page. Listen and see Peter's description of the course.

The game arcade in this video was custom built from scratch by Peter and student volunteers. There are controls for 4 simultaneous players. Six games have already been created. The Arcade remains on site for students to continue game testing and development.

The Twenty-Second Annual New York Dance and Performance Award (a.k.a. THE BESSIES) was presented to Miller and team "for seamlessly melding a dynamic score, digital effects, lighting, sets, and powerful choreography done with maximum commitment into an evocative performance affirming the power of community in Landing/Place at Dance Theater Workshop."
