Job Posting Summary
The University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute has earned
an international reputation for studying the earth and its physical
environment at high latitudes and training students in related
disciplines. It is one of the few institutes in the country where
scientists study a whole spectrum of geophysical processes ranging
from the center of the earth to the center of the sun and beyond. The
Information Design and Multimedia Specialist position is key to the
success of the Institute's ability to communicate its extensive
research activities with scientists, students, and the public from
around the world. This position uses the latest graphic design
technology and computer software to produce high-level graphical
animations and other multimedia products that effectively communicate
advanced scientific concepts and research results. It is also
responsible for design and production of professional publications
and works closely with IT staff to develop advanced web sites and
applications.

Knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position.
- Excellent analytical skills to interpret specifications, anticipate
problems, plan and monitor projects.
- Extensive practical experience in advanced graphic design
technologies and best practices including illustration, technical
drawing, storyboarding, computer graphics, animation, rendering,
compositing, video and audio editing, cartography, color theory,
color reproduction, and typography.
- Pre-press and offset printing experience.
- Strong multi-platform computer skills using Mac, Windows, and Linux/
Unix systems and software to include: Adobe Creative Suite products
(InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Flash, etc.), Corel
Graphics Suite, advanced animation software such as Autodesk Maya,
advanced compositing software such as Apple Shake, video editing
software such as Apple Final Cut Pro, word processing, spreadsheet,
presentation, and database software.
- Basic knowledge of web development technologies including HTML/
XHTML, CSS, CGI, and Flash. Familiarity with Section 508 and W3C WAI
guidelines.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills including the
ability to listen effectively. Basic familiarity with scientific
methodologies and terminology.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, often
juggling multiple projects on tight deadlines. Ability to work
effectively both independently and as a team member.
- Must be creative with the ability to come up with original designs
in short periods of time, often within strict budget constraints.
Typical education or training required for this position (including
licenses).
Bachelor's degree in communications/media, graphic design, computer
science, or related field, or equivalent combination of relevant
education and experience.

Digital Animation Faculty Position, Full-Time Tenure Track
Applications are invited for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor position in the area of Digital Animation. We seek an innovative professional committed to being part of a creative and engaging collaborative team of artists, designers, scientists, faculty and students working in a research environment focused on animation in traditional time-based media and in new media art practices including interactivity, virtual environments, game art, installation and performance. This is a joint appointment with the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD) and an appropriate department within the College of the Arts.

Minimum Experience/Education:
M.F.A. in media arts or an equivalent degree; professional experience in the field of animation, film and/or game design. 2-3 years of teaching experience preferred. Strong skills in 3D animation (Maya) and digital film production.

Departmental Required Skills:
Applicants should be able to teach a full range of digital techniques, and encourage the design of both informational and entertainment media within a broad-ranging program. Applicants should possess a strong technical grounding in design fundamentals, design process, and creative problem solving; knowledge of animation/ special effects industry and history, critical theory; critique skills; and good interpersonal communication skills.
