Afrotectopia at ACCAD: The Black Metal Starship Program

ACCAD had the honor of hosting Afrotectopia for an immersive journey into the Black Metal Starship Program from February 6–7. This experience, blending speculative design, Black culture, art, technology, and spirituality, challenged our perceptions of both space travel and inner exploration.

On February 6, we were transported into the world of Black Metal through a cinematic simulation, followed by a thought-provoking discussion with its creators—Jordan Caldwell, Jeremy Kamal, Kordae Jatafa Henry, and Ari Melenciano. The event provided a glimpse into how Black Metal functions as both a protocol for navigating the cosmos and a tool for self-discovery.

On February 7, the conversation deepened as the artists and researchers behind Afrotectopia shared their individual creative inquiries, offering insights into their multidisciplinary work in speculative futures. Their residency at ACCAD provided space to further develop their project, transforming OSU into a hub for radical imagination.

It was an inspiring and transformative experience—one that reminded us of the power of creativity in shaping new futures.
