Visual Problem (Option 1 - Redesign a Backpack)
  • Backpacks usually have little personality. Some are more stylish than others. Some are purely designed for function; and some are decorated with commercial cartoon imagery. But with time and use, some backpacks begin to take on the character of their respective owners, just as worn shoes or jeans do. Redesign a backpack to communicate your personality.

  • You may use any medium you wish (i.e. you may draw, use images, or photos).

  • Please include a short (2-3 sentences) written description that explains your choices.

Visual Problem (Option 2 - Draw a Musical Sound)
  • For many people, especially those involved in the visual arts, it is almost impossible to listen to music without imagining images. Sound has “color,” rhythm, emotion, style, personality.

  • Draw an image of a musical instrument. Abstract its form to represent the sound that the instrument creates.

  • Please include a short (2-3 sentences) written description that explains your choices.

Essay on an Inspirational Woman Artist or Craftsperson

Topic:

Please choose a woman artist or craft maker whose work you admire and write a one page essay describing the kind of work she does and why her work is inspirational to you. This could be an artist you discover by doing this research or one that has been a long time favorite.

Please take time, before you write, to think about what you want to say and the best examples to use to support your writing. Be as detailed as possible and cite specific works of art whenever possible.

Note: This question is meant to reflect your own synthesis of the material you are researching and should never be direct quotes from published materials.

Here are some resources that may help get you started. The books are all available in the Columbus Metropolitan Library system:
