ACCAD and the Department of Design are pleased to welcome visiting faculty member, Shadrick Addy. Shadrick will be teaching both Design and ACCAD courses over the 2019- 2020 academic year.

Shadrick explained, "I was born and raised in Liberia, West Africa. During the Liberian civil war, I came to the United States as a refugee and quickly gained interest in design and music. These were two creative skills that I believed could be used to influence society for the better. I still hold this sentiment true today, as my journey into academia has led to experimentation and consideration of the social implications of various creative mediums and immersive technology such as augmented and virtual reality.

I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in graphic design from Elizabeth City State University and went on to complete my graduate studies at NC State College of Design. During my graduate studies, I worked on numerous projects covering immersive mixed reality systems, user experience, user interface, and interaction design. My master's thesis focused on the implementation of mixed reality systems in historic house museums.

With an interest in user experience design pedagogy and the development of immersive experiences for cultural and social impact, I transitioned to The Ohio State University as a Visiting Assistant Professor. I’m currently teaching a graduate course at the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD) on Designing Immersive Virtual Environments, and an undergraduate course in the Visual Communication Department focused on motion graphics.

My research interest explores how designers can leverage extended reality (XR) systems to recreate historical experiences, encourage empathy, and facilitate social interaction in educational and cultural environments."
